Special Events

Occasionally Metro Camden Habitat for Humanity (MCHH) holds or participates in special events which may requirire the creativitity and/or support of volunteers.   Some of these Special Events include hosting students during Collegiate Challenge weeks;  House Dedications for new Homeowners; Donor Appreciation Days; Build Day Events such as Martin Luther King Day or Building On Faith week, FUNdraiser activities, etc.  Below is an overview of the different areas that you may choose to get involved.

Collegiate Challenge OrganizerCollegiate Challenge Organizer

Collegiate Challenge is a HFH International event, where college students travel during their spring break to volunteer on a construction site for one week.  MCHH is responsible for providing lunches and a place for the students to stay during their time at our affiliate.  Volunteers would arrange for housing (usually at a local church with shower facilities);  arrange for lunches for the workgroup(s) from local restaurants and organizations.  It may also include arranging for a dinner(s) at a church or school, suggest tourist spots for the students to visit, etc.  Relationships with housing hosts and food providers exist, but scheduling and recruiting new supporters is always required.

FUNdraisers: Any activity that results in raising awareness about poverty housing while raising funds for MCHH.

Volunteers may be needed to coordinate, hold or assist with FUNdraisisers such as

Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends Days and/or Macy’s “Shop for Charity” Days

Host/Hostess/Busboys/girls at local Restaurants

‘Strike Out Poverty’ bowling events

Bussing tables at the Silver Diner on Habitat nights

Greeting customers at other Dine for Habitat nights at participating restaurants

Staffing refreshment booths at local sports venues

Organizing ‘Alternative Gift Markets’ during the holiday time at your place of worship

Concerts and auctions

Spaghetti dinners or Simple Suppers

Walk-, bowl-, dance-A Thons

Pennies for Palaces Instructors educate Elementary School children about Habitat for Humanity in a way that is easy to understand.  Using a PowerPoint presentation, instructors tell the story about how HFH began, discuss what it means to be a volunteer, what it takes to build a house, and ultimately, how the students can help build by holding a coin collection.  Training is required prior to participating.  Best suited for volunteers who have experience teaching or working with young children and enjoy sharing the story about Habitat to others.  Also looking for volunteers to reach out to schools to get them involved as to have P4P programs running throughout the year within the county.

Printer Cartridge RecyclingPrinter Cartridge Recycling:  We collect used printer cartridges from fax machines, printers and copiers. Helping out is simple.  Tell your friends and family about the program and remind them that when their cartridge gets empty, put it in the new cartridges box and set it aside.  We are always looking for volunteers to recruit new businesses as well as for volunteers to do pickups at businesses when necessary.    View Printer Cartridge Recycling Brochure

Speakers BureauSpeakers Bureau volunteers speak to specific groups about MCHH typically to employees at a business, members of a house of worship, an organization, such as the K of C or Lions Club, high-school students, etc.  Topics vary depending on the audience.  Typical topics include: general information about Habitat for Humanity including volunteer recruitment, history & future of MCHH, how the housing program works; house sponsorship, etc.  Training is required to be a speaker.  Best suited for volunteers who have been involved with Habitat for quite some time and have a good understanding of the program as a whole.  Also for those with a passion to raise awareness about Habitat for Humanity and who are comfortable with public speaking.  Dates/times depend on speaker requests.

Special Event Organizers:  Volunteers would help MCHH staff organize the specific event that may include: creating/sending invitations; arranging for donations of food(gift certificates from stores if necessary), decorations, sound system, tables/chairs or other items needed for event; set-up/break-down, depending on the specifics of the event.

Table TalkersTable Talkers attend events geared towards raising awareness and learning how to get involved.  Such events include missions fairs at places of worship, volunteer fairs held at corporations or organizations, events or fundraisers held at stores, restaurants, sporting events (baseball games, golf outings) etc.  Volunteers answer questions about MCHH and Habitat for Humanity as well as generate interest among the group to recruit new volunteers and donors.  Opportunities are ongoing, based on requests.  General knowledge about Habitat for Humanity & MCHH is required and we are willing to teach those who have a passion to spread the word about HFH.  Best suited for volunteers who are outgoing and comfortable with answering questions and speaking to multiple people in a casual setting.

Worksite Tour GuidesWorksite Tour Guides would meet with a group who was interested in learning more about where their contributions go, or who was interested in becoming more involved with MCHH. The tour, which would last approx. one hour, begins with a discussion about MCHH’s history, vision, goals and needs meet them. It then takes the group for a walk around the neighborhood, pointing out interesting stories about the houses, families, etc. It may also include visiting a house under construction.  Knowledge of the project and history of MCHH is necessary prior to leading worksite tours.   Tour dates/times would be set up in advance by request.  Best suited for volunteers with a good understanding of the history and projects that MCHH has worked on, as well as an interest in sharing those stories with a group of people who are interested in learning about the organization.
