Construction Trades Training Program
Metro Camden Habitat for Humanity (MCHH) has been building houses in Camden since 1986, making homeownership possible for families who otherwise could never have afforded to purchase their own home. MCHH promotes homeownership because we believe that it is vitally important to the economic stability of the family and ultimately the neighborhood and the city.
Equally important to the economic stability of a family is the ability of one or more family members to secure long term employment at a living wage. The 2000 Census reported that:
- 51.9% of Camden households earn $25,000 or less in annual income
- 25.0% of Camden households earn $10,000 or less in annual income
- 41.6% of the population, age 16 and older, is employed
To meet the crushing need that underlies these abysmal statistics, MCHH launched a Construction Trades Training Program (CTTP) in July 2006. This program serves individuals that are under-skilled and low wage earners. The CTTP provides the opportunity for interested individuals to develop skills that will command a decent wage and provide lifelong employment. Trainees will learn their craft working alongside the volunteer labor force building homes in the community.
Interested participants must be at least 18 years old and available full-time (Wednesday – Saturday, 7:00am-5:00pm). Trainees receive a small stipend as well as the opportunity to learn a wide range of construction skills while working on the houses.
Timeframe is open-ended, ranging from 6-12 months depending on the trainee.
Trainees slots are filled as work and funding allows. Applications are available at all times (see download below), however, are only accepted when slots are available.
